Rosacea is a pretty common skin disorder. It is the tendency of the skin to flush or blush more than usual. Use only gentle skin care products: Avoid ingredients in skin care products such as fragrance, alcohol, menthol, eucalyptus oil, witch hazel, peppermint, clove oil, acetone substances, and salicylic acid. Use water soluble. gentle and natural products, as anything that stings, burns or causes redness will aggravate the problem. After washing your skin, blot gently with a soft, cotton cloth.

Use a moisturizer: This is a really important part for proper maintenance of rosacea. Those who suffer from rosacea, often times, comes up with a dry, itchy and tight skin, therefore, moisturizers are essential. It keeps the skin moist and comfortable. Use those moisturizers that don’t contain any fragrance and are rated for sensitive skin.

Massage your face: Massaging your face can help a lot. Start by gently rubbing your face in a circular motion. Your starting position should be in the middle of your face. Gently work your way upwards towards your ears. Don’t rub too hard as this will stimulate the circulation and will cause even more irritation and redness.

Cover up: You can also put a green-tinted makeup as a cover-up on your face. This will hide your redness and broken blood vessels. Stay indoors and avoid high temperatures and prolonged sun exposure. Cool off in a room that is air-conditioned.

Care for your eyes: Rosacea is a very troubling issue which can even affect your eyes and this can be very unbearable sometimes. If your eyes have turned red and irritated, use an eyelid cleaner or watered-down baby shampoo and clean your eyelids gently when required. Putting a warm compress on your eyes will also improve the situation dramatically.

It’s also possible to control rosacea symptoms with the help of gentle skin care. When cleansing your face, be gentle. Don’t rub too hard. Rinse with lots of cool water and blot dry. If you have a prescription medication to apply, put it on gently and allow it to dry. Check with your doctor before using any other moisturizer, sunscreen, or makeup to be sure they will not react with your medication.

Examine products such as soap, moisturizers, makeup, perfumes, after-shave lotion, shampoo, hair spray, and other household products like laundry detergents as they can contain irritants that will irritate your skin.

Treatments for rosacea: There is no cure for rosacea. However, proper treatments can help you manage the bumps, and redness, the other uncomfortable symptoms. Your doctor may suggest the following medicines:

Brimonidine (Mirvaso): A gel that works by tightening the blood vessels underneath the skin surface. This can easily get rid of some of your redness.

Azelaic acid: Available in gel and foam. This can clear up bumps, redness, and swelling.

Metronidazole (Flagyl) and doxycycline: These are antibiotics that are effective to kill bacteria. These can reduce the population of the troublesome bacteria living on your red and swelling skin.

Isotretinoin (Claravis, Amnesteem): An acne drug. It can effectively clear skin bumps as well. However, if you are pregnant, you should avoid it at all costs as it causes serious birth defects.

Depending on your skin, the medicines may take a few weeks or even months for a visible and improved result. Your doctor may also recommend other procedures for treating your rosacea.

Laser treatment: This treatment is performed by using intense light. It can get rid of the blood vessels that have gotten larger.

Dermabrasion: This procedure sands off the uppermost layer of the skin.

Electrocautery: This procedure is performed by zapping the damaged blood vessels.

Your diet and rosacea: Researches have proven that you can also reduce your rosacea dramatically just by removing certain foods from your regular diet, such as white carbohydrates, sugar and animal foods (eggs, cheese, milk, and meat etc.). Instead, your diet should include a large number of anti-inflammatory foods like nuts, grains, vegetable oils (almond, linseed, olive etc.).

Suffering from rosacea does not have to change your life. You can make small changes in your habits or routine to control your symptoms. Try to do everything in moderation to live a healthy life.


A rosacea patient may have several subtypes, so treatment should be tailored to the individual. The goal of treatment is controlling the rosacea symptoms while improving the appearance of the skin. Another important thing is patience. People with rosacea, regardless of the treatments they are undertaking, have to be very patient, up to several months before the condition improves.     Thanks for a great article! I have been suffering from rosacea for about 3 years or so and I get bad flare ups every few years. I have had the latest flare-up about a month ago and I have been using Azelaic acid which seems to calm my inflamed and pimply face. By the way, I’m not a sales person from the Ordinary. I just want to share my experience with this remedy as I know how annoying to have this debilitating skin condition! I hope we all get a cure from this skin condition in the future so that we can lead a normal life!!
